ALPINISM
Hervé Barmasse

Born and raised at the foot of the Matterhorn, my family have been
alpine guides for generations. It seemed almost inevitable that
I would become an alpinist too.
In reality, it all happened gradually and almost by chance. At 15, I was on
the path to becoming a ski champion, then a bad accident during a
competition cut short my future as a professional skier.
So, one icy October dawn, there I was, about to climb the Matterhorn
for the first time. At that moment I couldn’t even imagine that the mountains
would give me some of the most meaningful experiences in my life.
That day on the Matterhorn,
I unknowingly decided
what my future would be.
